Candle Safety

All Candles

  • Remove all packaging and labels before lighting.
  • Place all candles on a heat resistant and dry surface away from the reach of children and pets.
  • Keep burning candles away from flammable items such as curtains and fabrics.
  • Keep away from other heat sources.- To prevent fading and dripping do not place candles in direct sunlight and other sources of heat such as TV’s.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep wick trimmed to 0.5cm-Regularly trimming the wick reduces flame height and excess smoke. Any formation of carbon on the tip of the wick is generally referred to as “clubbing” due to its shape and should be removed.
  • Burn out of draughts- Burning candles in draughts will cause them to smoke, which may cause smoke damage and sooting.
  • To safely extinguish a candle, always use a snuffer.
  • Leave at least 5 cm between candles.
  • Extinguish candles with care, as wax may splatter. Preferably use a candle snuffer.

Tapers, batons, pillars and dinner candles

  • Always leave at least 10cm between candles.- If placing under shelving ensure that there is ample headroom.
  • Position candles in an upright position.

  • Place tealight holders on a heat resistant surface.
  • Do not allow foreign objects to fall into wax pool. Foreign objects such as discarded matches, labels and dust can ignite and act as a secondary wick. If this happens extinguish immediately.
  • Never let the flame come into contact with the side of the container or use a damaged container.
  • Burn out of the reach of children and pets.

Useful tips

  • Never move a lit candle.
  • For lighting always use extra long matches and preferably a candle snuffer to extiniguish.
  • Candle sharpeners will ensure that the perfect fit into any holder.
  • For optimum performance of larger candles and candle jars allow the candle to liquefy across the diameter (approx 3-4 hours). This allows the candle to burn evenly and avoid tunneling. It will also give your candle a longer burn time.
  • To remove spilt wax from fabrics or carpets, cover wax spill with brown paper or any other absorbent material such as kitchen paper and gently iron the area with a warm iron until all the wax is absorbed.
  • Store candles in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight or fluorescent light. Storage temperature should never exceed 28c (82f) or fall below 2c (35f). Exposure to moisture may inhibit lighting.
  • Should your jar become blackened while burning, extinguish your candle, allow to cool, and then carefully wipe the jar with a paper towel.
