We're delighted to announce that we were the winners of the Green Innovation category in the Made in the North West Awards 2016! The ceremony took place at the Macron Stadium in Bolton earlier this month and we managed to beat some tough competition to come out on top.
Although we're known for our home fragrance, you might not know the part we play in Green Innovation, which is why we thought we would share our Green story.
The wind turbine, situated behind our factory in Lindal-in-Furness, Cumbria
Our main Green positive is our on-site wind turbine. Our landlord installed the turbine in late 2014, and throughout 2015, it made over 1.5 million kWh (kilowatt-hour) - with the average home using 4000 kWh per year, you can see how powerful this is! Turbine use at our factory was 57.61%, meaning some electricity could be given back to the grid.

There are also plans for on-site solar panels which could create over 200,000 kWh per year - not bad going!
Waste Reduction and Recycling
Although we all want to reduce the amount of energy we use, we also need to look at reusing or reducing the amount of waste we produce. For us, this means we're smart about the amount of packaging and raw materials we purchase, as well as reusing any waste streams that we can; cardboard, plain glass, cans, tins, wax, batteries and paper are sent for reuse or recycling. This also includes drinks bottles or cans from our office, factory and warehouse staff (and believe us, these can add up)! In short, this means that 99% of our waste is diverted away from landfill. Even small things such as posters reminding people to turn lights off that aren't in use are just as important and help our cause.
Transport and Machinery
Any company cars are always chosen for their low carbon emissions and highly rated fuel economy. We also have a cycle-to-work scheme in place to cut down on car emissions when people drive to work. When you're situated where we are, it's a pleasure to cycle almost anywhere!
All the machinery and lighting we use has been chosen as a result of its energy efficiency and we even investigate if alternative energies can be used.
Northern and Proud
An ariel shot of our home in Lindal-in-Furness, Cumbria
Rather like the Starks in Game of Thrones, we're proud to be from the North and source as much as possible from Northern businesses. Not only does this help support local business, but it also massively reduces our carbon footprint.
All in all, we love where we live and we want to protect and minimise our impact on the environment as much as possible - after all, not everybody is lucky enough to live in the beautiful Lake District!
