Happy 36th Birthday To Us!
We're celebrating 36 beautiful smelling years. Happy birthday to us! It's been 36 years since we were born in a garage in Cumbria and my oh my, haven\'t we come a long way since then! We\'re now the UK\'s largest home fragrance company and are proud to be based in the heart of the Lake District. So much has happened over the years, so we thought we\'d take a little trip down memory lane with you... The 1980s - When the magic began Wax Lyrical hasn\'t always been Wax Lyrical - the Williams family created the "Nice Things Company", a small import company working out of a little garage in Grange-over-Sands. "Candimals" (candles in the shape of animals) were their best seller, helping the company to turn over more than £1 million! Naturally, this lead to them producing candles themselves, starting the home fragrance journey to Wax Lyrical as you know us now. The 1990s - Renaming and royalty visits...
1st October 1990, Princess Diana opened our offices in Lindal-in-Furness. After becoming too big for a little Cumbrian garage to handle, we took up residence in Lindal-in-Furness, where we\'re still situated today. We had the pleasure of a visit from Princess Diana in 1990 when she kindly opened our offices for us. We still proudly display a beautiful photograph of her with a plaque commemorating the day in our reception. We were also renamed as the Colony Gift Corporation in this decade and in 1999, we were bought by Blyth Inc, an American home fragrance company.
Our offices with the (then) new Colony branding. The 2000s - Saved from the brink With Blyth at the helm, we entered other areas of home decor such as imported floral accessories, textiles and Christmas decorations. Lessons were learnt and although profitable at first, it became clear that we should revert to what we knew best - we led the home fragrance market by being one of the first companies in the UK to produce reed diffusers. In 2006, the Colony everyone knew and loved was about to change forever. Despite best efforts, the company was making huge losses. It just so happened at around that time, Mike Armstead, a Northern entrepreneur visited our factory shop with his wife whilst holidaying in the Lake District - he heard the company was up for sale and decided to save Colony from the brink of receivership on 23rd December - since then, we've never looked back! Mike decided to bring manufacturing back to the UK and champion the "Made in Britain" movement, something which we're still very passionate about. 2010 and beyond It wasn't until 2010 that we adopted our new name 'Wax Lyrical', which has helped us reach new heights such as becoming the UK's largest home fragrance company, as well as exporting to over 40 countries around the globe!
We love where we live and we're sure you can see why! We're the little green and white row of buildings at the bottom of the picture. As we're sure you've all seen at the top of our website, we made the decision to change our branding earlier this year, with the font paying homage to Northern ironmongery and the copper colour reflecting the warmth of candle light.
Wax Lyrical's Spring/Summer 2016 Trade Catalogue Finally, our latest news - the Portmeirion Group acquired Wax Lyrical last month, making headlines all over the country. Being a great British brand themselves, they understand exactly what's important to us and of course, what's important to our customers. We believe this is just another step on the road to greatness and are so excited to see what the future holds. Roll on the next 36 years!
